Chocolate Does Make You Feel Good

 

Chocolate is derived from the Cacao Tree, which was found in the Central American rain forests over fifteen hundred years ago and was worshipped by the Mayan civilisation of Central America and Southern Mexico. The Mayans named the tree ‘Cacao’ which means “God Food”.  Cacao became ‘Cocoa’ eventually, so named by European explorers.  The seeds of the Cacao Tree (Cocoa Beans) were roasted and pounded with Maize and Chilli Peppers by the Mayans and left to ferment which produced a spicy, bittersweet drink.

 

Chocolate was known to be an aphrodisiac by the Mayans and Aztecs and when the Spanish discovered it they too continued to associate chocolate with love and so it has continued to this day – hence chocolates are given as a loving gesture with the ‘Box of Chocolates’!

 

A complex substance, chocolate has been found to contain Phenylethylamine and Serotonin – mood lifting agents.  These occur

naturally in the brain and when we are feeling happy, feeling love, passion and/or lust, these substances are released by the brain into the nervous system, which causes a sudden mood change, rise in blood pressure, increasing the heart rate and brings on an extreme

feeling of well being or euphoria, associated with being in love.   Scientists have observed this fact, hence chocolate has a reputation for

being an aphrodisiac.  In addition, chocolate increases stamina by giving the body an immediate energy boost.
